View Full Version : My 2012 Polaris Switchback Assault

SBA800
04-23-2012, 12:09 PM
Well last november i slapped down my money for a 2012 polaris switchback assault. this is the 144" track with the new 800CC engine.
and of course this was one of the worst winters ever so i only got to put 40 miles on it. not even broken in yet.
Just thought id slap some pics up!

this is when i first got it from the dealer.

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f51/george613/db000a80.jpg

sittin at home.

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f51/george613/671f830c.jpg

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f51/george613/a4a34b0c.jpg

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f51/george613/3524df98.jpg

fired it up for the second time in its life.
mmmm gotta love that 2 stroke smoke

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f51/george613/6d5b6e47.jpg

first mod i knew i wanted was wider skis for deep snow. picked up some polaris Gripper skis, these things are amazing for a factory product. and naturally, i got red since blac is plain and boring!

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f51/george613/7f8f1d50.jpg

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f51/george613/e5689497.jpg

compared to the old stock skis.
much wider

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f51/george613/39e888b6.jpg

heard a rumor a buddies brother picked up the same sled as me, so right away i ordered a decal kit and got that installed.

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f51/george613/75d36261.jpg

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f51/george613/512658f3.jpg

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f51/george613/4d52fda5.jpg

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f51/george613/4f905dc9.jpg

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f51/george613/f5d3ec23.jpg

also threw on some handguards

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f51/george613/ffe368ea.jpg

heres with the last few pieces of the wrap on, as well as a new powder coated bumper

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f51/george613/e6f714eb.jpg

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f51/george613/16fada16.jpg

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f51/george613/9a94be93.jpg

then i threw on a gas can rack

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f51/george613/8841327f.jpg

thats pretty much all i did this year, when it finally snowed in march, i got to ride it, and test its limits. i thought no way in hell id get through this stuff as it was blown in, hard packed underneath the few inches of powder, and i was right. but i did make it farther than i though. now i know the limits! (ps. did this on purpose, i was literally right across from my house haha0

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f51/george613/fee572e0.jpg

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f51/george613/c142528d.jpg

she dug right down to the ground. bought 4' from the bottom of the skis to the ground. shoveled the front down a bit, and she pulled right now.
really amazing machine, so glad i decided to go with the new polaris's. these new engines are truely fantastic.

cant wait till i get some real miles on it.

That's a sick sled! I need to get one for the mountains north of here. Would be awesome!
yeah man theyre awesome sleds. the new 800 motor they have is amazing. simply amazing. and mines not even broken in yet! they used to have problems with their old 800 so a lot of people were skeptical on the new ones, but i tell ya, so glad i got one. id definately reccomend it over any other sled out there.

that thing is a beast. how fast can u get it going?

well top speed as reported by other owners is about 100-110 MPH.
ive only had mine up to about 70MPH as im not supposed to go wide open till after a full tank of gas. engine and drive belt need to be broken in first, otherwise i could blow it all!
but it gets there quick, before i knew it i was passing cars on the highway. did not expect that at all.

p.s. my old sled was from 1983, so this 150 HP machine literally almost tore my arms outta their socket when i first gave it some gas

yeah its damn fast.
may not sound fast, but when your flying 100MPH through a field of white powder, with nothing surrounding you to keep you safe, it seems damn fast haha

oppo
05-02-2012, 09:44 AM
Yeah, there is a big difference between on and off highway speeds as well as with and without a cage around you. There is more of a sense of speed on the bike or quad and at the same speed, the quad feels as if it is going faster due to being offroad where the bike is glass smooth. The bike's top speed is a hoot though until you get used to it. The most I have hit on the quad was 80 and that was with the 30's on it under ideal conditions. Another 30 mph and on snow would kick ass. :D

SBA800
05-02-2012, 10:55 PM
its so much fun man, its like your floating... but at 110 mph.
thats the best way to describe it lol

I'm digging the decals though. Looks sweet!

naw its not a deathwish unless your reckless.
its like anything, gotta treat it with respect.
i think it will be a while before i hit that speed though, when i had it going 70 it was damn scary fast.

on a smooth lake though 100 would be so fun.
and thanks on the decals, they are pretty mean lookin. i think i have the perfect amount of red on there now

SBA800
05-04-2012, 10:42 PM
well ive got one, its pretty shitty due to very low snow conditions, my brother was bitching that people could see how to get to his place and they might steal his shit (hes a tad strange sometimes) so ive got it hidden, PM me for a link.

SBA800
10-17-2012, 02:54 PM
well its getting to be that time of year again. started doing inventory on what id need for the year, plugs, belts, oil etc. got a list of what i need, and while i was inspecting the sled for shit that may not be quite right, i decided to pull it out and fire it up. been to long since ive had it running and i just couldnt help myself. so i started it up and sat on it for about 5 minutes. felt good. cant wait till it snows.

Dude, that thing is awesome, nice work on the mods! :)

So what do you have to do to get unstuck, dig it out a ramp to climb up onto? What if you are over like 6 foot of snow?

SBA800
10-17-2012, 09:50 PM
just gotta dig the front end down a bit or get the rear on some fresh snow. they dont get stuck easily.

heres a good video showing how much of a beast these things are.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCh59r-1RyQ

only reason i got stuck up there was the ski got caught in that barrel. and the track dug all the way down to the ground (4+ feet) giving it no snow to bite.

And THAT is why I am snowchecking a 2014 800 PRO RMK when spring rolls around...provided my truck doesn't give me any big issues between now and then. I'm always amazed by the pros. What they can do is truly mind blowing.

SBA800
10-26-2012, 08:24 PM
long story short

-trailering sled into dealer.
-20 miles into the trip, freak snow storm and crazy winds
-highway is shit from summer patching they did.
-series of events lead to trailer swaying back and forth crazily
-sheared the safety chain, and came off the ball
-i managed to slow it down and get it under control, but it fell off the ball.
-trailer then proceeded to roll into the ditch.
-everything was 100% fine
-i drove into the ditch, rehooked it up, and drove outta the ditch.

It was like 78 here, pretty nice actually.

every time I see your damn sled, it makes me want to get one. First things first I need to get my dirt bike. I'm so impatient that I just emailed the guy again to figure out when we're meeting up to check out the bike. I've even contemplated just buying a different one because i could probably get it today, lol

well, if he aint responding fuck him. get a different one.

and yeah, i really shouild have boughta summer fun toy first.... guaranteed usage. whereas with a sled, not guaranteed you will be able to use it. and believe me, having a $15K garage ornament is NOT fun

Only reason I'm not pursuing another one is because this is potentially a great deal, and he was nice enough to hold it for me until I got back home. Otherwise I would have already bought the YZ 250 I've had my eyes on for the same price.

Yeah exactly....I wanted to be, but I'm not going to be. He emailed me back earlier and I'm going to meet him at 7 tonight, so if all goes well and it's a solid bike, I'll have myself a new bike tonight!

finally got straps to strap down a gas can.

kinda hard to see, but its pretty simple.
cost was $4 for the straps. they were 9 ft long each. cut em down to length needed and burned the ends so they dont fray. i can lift the sled off the ground by the gas can, so im gonna say its safe to say its not gonna be moving at all

extra fuel to burn when you crash?

SBA800
01-17-2013, 02:25 AM
haha extra fuel for when im a dumbass and run out.

never know whats gonna happen when ya get out in the middle of the bush and get lost.
they aint got gas stations out there lol. only holds 2.5 gallons, so at best it would give me an extra 25-30 miles of riding. realisticly more like 20-25

that doesnt seem right for such a small engine

That is in interesting looking buckle/clasp thing on that strap. Haha if you can left it up by the can then yea, I'd say they're secure.

Always gotta have extra gas. We rode long enough the other night to actually have to throw a couple gallons in my buddies sled in order to keep riding so I could put a few more miles on mine. First time I'd ever needed the extra gas, but I'll never go on a ride without it.

They're two strokers, and make 150 Hp....They burn some fuel. Haha. They aren't eco boxes. Otherwise the EPA would leave us alone.....

so my raptor gets better gas mileage than your sled???

AK SNO RIDER
01-17-2013, 02:38 AM
I honestly don't know what kind of mpgs I get. Even with my old sled I never checked. Not worth checking when you do mountain riding, it will always be different. Depends on the terrain, amount of snow, etc. Jarrett might know what he gets since he mainly trail rides.

Do you have a 6.2? 411 HP right? I mean, if you think about it, that's roughly 66 HP per liter of engine. Mine and Jarretts sleds make 187.5 HP per liter of motor.

nosbusa
01-17-2013, 03:10 AM
my busa gets 44 mpg on average. when im not on the nos im still at just over 200hp.....

AK SNO RIDER
01-17-2013, 03:28 AM
Difference is it's on pavement and spinning little tires, not a big, heavy, off balance track in snow, plus it's a 4 stroke.

And a Busa with nos? That must be one hell of a ride.

nosbusa
01-17-2013, 11:50 AM
its one of those things you have to experience to know about. come down some day let you run a quarter on it.

SBA800
01-17-2013, 03:07 PM
yeah 2 smoker sleds arent good on gas. when im on trail i figure i can get close to 15 MPG at best. my last ride i was full tank, did about 45 miles and im sitting at 3/4 tank left exactly. 11 gallon tank, so about 14 mpg.

off trail, lucky to get anything more than 10 lol.

when you ride for 3 hours and dont leave a 2 mile radius, does it really matter what MPG you get? more like smiles per gallon.

That's a drag man. An insurance on it or hope that the cops may find it?

MrM
03-02-2016, 12:22 PM
had theft insurance thankfully. They paid out a pretty good amount. Cops will never find it. Come spring it will likely be sinking to the bottom of a lake up north.

sisters boyfriends sled was in our yard as well, stolen too. He didnt have theft though, poor guy.

Shit man that sucks. Good thing you had insurance. I bet the other guy gets insurance from now on.

MrM
03-14-2016, 10:09 AM
yeah for sure. he was kicking himself.

I mean, it's expensive as fuck over $900 a year I paid. But that $900 is still cheaper than a new sled right.

Insurance paid out $8100. I still owed about $3600. So I came out ahead imo.

Buddy still owed $2000 on his. So hes paying for something he doesnt own anymore. Pretty shitty. I always insure anything worth more than $1500.

My quad, I don't bother insuring because the payout would be so low it's not worth it.
